Rainfall in Maritime Tropical Air over the Midwest, July

چکیده
The minfall over the Midwest from July 16-18, 1953 aroused the curiosity o€ all interested in the relationship between weather and the weather map. The fronts that are often invoked to explain the weather were absent. When rain occurs without the aid of fronts, as in this case, the meteorologist must seek other explanations of the phenomenon. This article presents an investigation of the possible causes in this instance of such precipitation and an attempt to find a model suitable for portrayal on the weather map. I t is concluded that a theoretical model proposed by Bjerknes and Holmboe seems suitable.

Thunderstorm Electrical Parameters vis-à-vis Rainfall and Surface Air Temperatures over a Tropical Inland Station, Pune, India
The relationship of lightning with rainfall and temperature is investigated on the basis of a four-year (2004– 2007) data set over the Pune region. It is found that the annual variations of stroke count and rainfall both are bimodal with the first peak value of rainfall showing a one month time lag from the first peak value of stroke count. This is attributed to the prime period of the onset ph...
متن کاملRain on small tropical islands
[1] A high‐resolution rainfall climatology based on observations from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission’s Precipitation Radar (PR) instrument is used to evaluate the influence of small tropical islands on climatological rainfall. Islands with areas between one hundred and several thousand km are considered in both the Indo‐Pacific Maritime Continent and Caribbean regions. Annual mean clim...
متن کاملResidual Diagnosis of Diabatic Heating from ERA-40 and NCEP Reanalyses: Intercomparisons with TRMM
Diabatic heating is diagnosed from the 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) circulation as a residue in the thermodynamic equation. The heating distribution is compared with the heating structure diagnosed from NCEP and 15-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-15) circulation and latent heating generated from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) observations using the convective–stratiform heating (CSH) ...
متن کاملTropical western Pacific warm pool and maritime continent precipitation rates and their contrasting relationships with the Walker Circulation
[1] The Cenozoic reorganization of islands in the Maritime Continent region of the tropical western Pacific may have increased the amount of land surface area, changed the distribution of sea surface temperature (SST), and consequently provided a necessary condition for the onset of the Walker Circulation. Precipitation rates over the Maritime Continent, measured with the Tropical Rainfall Meas...
متن کاملAssessment of the Regional Climate Model Version 3 over the Maritime Continent Using Different Cumulus Parameterization and Land Surface Schemes
This paper describes an assessment of the Regional Climate Model, version 3 (RegCM3), coupled to two land surface schemes: the Biosphere–Atmosphere Transfer System, version 1e (BATS1e), and the Integrated Biosphere Simulator (IBIS). The model’s performance in simulating precipitation over the Maritime Continent was evaluated against the 3-hourly Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multis...
